Mark Strong’s Sinestro Will Keep The Classic ‘Stache And Story

Hollywood’s new supervillain, Mark Strong, spilled a few details on what’s in store for his badass character Sinestro in Green Lantern. It sounds like they’re sticking very close to the original Sinestro look – good news for pencil-thin mustache aficionados.

In an interview with USA Today, Strong leaked a few costume and plot details about his character Sinsetro:

“For anybody who’s familiar with the Green Lantern and the origin story, the film closely follows the early comics. Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan’s mentor, slightly suspicious and not sure of him because obviously Hal is the first human being who’s made into a Green Lantern. He’s certainly very strict and certainly unsure of the wisdom of Hal becoming a Green Lantern,” Strong says.

“He is a military guy but isn’t immediately bad. It’s the kind of person he is that lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he’s quite a heroic figure.”

Strong also hints that his outfit and other character traits “closely follow the character’s early days”:

“That widow’s peak and thin mustache was for some reason originally based on David Niven, and Hal Jordan was based on Errol Flynn,” said Strong, who recently got fitted for special Sinestro contact lenses.

Great news for Green Lantern purists. Sinestro is a respected member of the Green Lantern Corps, and his eventual fall and then rise to badassdom makes him so fearsome. Also, that iconic “David Niven” look, which Strong mentions, is classic villain. We’re very excited to watch Strong’s rise to bad guy superstardom with his collection of big bad characters from Lord Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes, his evil mob boss role in Kick-Ass, Green Lantern, and later as Matai Shang in John Carter of Mars.
