The Green Lantern TV Show Has Found Its Sinestro

Hal and John's upcoming HBO show may be set on Earth, but that doesn't mean some alien Lanterns won't be a part of their story.

The casting ball has been slowly rolling for DC’s LanternsĀ series. After snagging Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre to play respective leads Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart, more actors have been picked up to play supporting roles in the show. This new addition is a sizable one: Thaal Sinestro, Jordan’s primary nemesis in the comics.

Per Deadline, the DC villain will be played by Danish actor Ulrich Thomson, recently of NBC’sĀ The BlacklistĀ and the upcoming Uwe Boll film,Ā Run. WhileĀ LanternsĀ is primarily set on Earth as Hal and John investigate a murder in the American heartland, Thomson’s set for a recurring role throughout the eight-episode season. Thomson joins a cast which presently includes Kelly Macdonald, Garrett Dillahunt, and Poorna Jagannathan.

In the comics, Sinestro is a Green Lantern during Hal’s early days and one of its best members who takes Hal under his ring. Eventually, he’s revealed to be abusing his power to rule over his homeworld Korugar, and becomes obsessed with taking down his former Corps and mentee. He later gains access to the Yellow Lantern power of Fear and leads what comes to be known as the Sinestro Corps, frequently getting into battles with the Greens and other Lanterns of the emotional color spectrum. Sinestro’s popped up throughout DC’s animated shows over the years, and his big live-action appearance of note was when Mark Strong played him in the 2011 Green LanternĀ movie, which set up his turn as a Yellow Lantern in the final moments and never got to follow through on it.

Expect Sinestro and theĀ LanternsĀ show to hit HBO and Max in 2026.
