Verizon iPhones have had a killer problem since the iPhone 5 launched: The new Apple handset has been sucking down a TON of data, even when it’s connected to Wi-Fi. Apple has pushed a patch live—here’s how to get it super quickly and easily.
All you need to do is go into Settings > General > About, and wait for a message that reads:
“Carrier Settings Updated: To install important new settings, tap OK, then press and hold the power button, drag the slider, and restart.”
So basically, turn your phone off and on again. After doing that, you should check to make sure the carrier software has been changed to Verizon 13.1.
Thankfully, Verizon apparently knows this has been an issue, and will not charge you for any enormous data usage related to the bug. Here’s the statement it sent to 9to5mac:
“Under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Apple has a fix that is being delivered to Verizon customers right on their iPhone 5. Verizon Wireless customers will not be charged for any unwarranted cellular data usage.”
Big dumb problem, quick easy solution. [9to5mac]
Update: Reports are coming in that this problem isn’t just for Verizon customers. It’s happening to people on AT&T too, though there’s been no official acknowledgement yet. Have any of you seen this happening on carriers other than Verizon?
