Watching Lake Ice Slowly Pile Up on Shore Is a Soothing Reminder That Spring Is Coming Soon

Those of us who experience the cold of winter here in North America have definitely had our fill of snow and frigid temperatures. There is beauty to be found when the thermometer drops below freezing, like the sights and sounds of lake ice cracking and piling up on the shore, but it’s mostly soothing as a reminder that spring will soon be here.

Strong winds and sub-zero temperatures on Lake Superior resulted in massive sheets of thin surface being blown towards the shore for hours. But like a crowded escalator with a passenger who’s slow to step off at the end, as the ice hit the shore it had no where to go, so it shattered and quickly turned into mountains of jagged, shimmering crystals. Watch the video on loop and the thirty-nine days until spring will fly by.
