Train Crashes Into New Jersey Station—1 Dead, Dozens Injured [Updated]

A train crashed into a station in Hoboken, New Jersey around 8:45am this morning, according to reports. There are 74 injured and three in serious condition. The train’s conductor is in critical condition. One fatality has been confirmed by officials. (Correction 12:03pm: We previously cited NBC News which reported that three people had been confirmed dead.)

The cause of the crash is currently unknown. The train was number 1614 on the Pascack Valley Line which departed from Spring Valley at 7:23am and was due to arrive in Hoboken at 8:38am.

The Hoboken train station is a major commuting hub for New York City, providing service to PATH and New Jersey Transit.

“The train simply did not stop,” a bystander told CBS New York.

“It was for a couple seconds, but it felt like an eternity,” Bhagyesh Shah, a passenger, told NBC. “I saw a woman pinned under the concrete. A lot of people were bleeding, one guy was crying.”

The New Jersey EMS is currently reporting over 100 patients, and New Jersey Transit said that multiple passengers were still trapped an hour after the event. According to NBC, there are “no initial signs Hoboken train crash was terror related or deliberate act.”

Update 10:03am: Passengers are no longer trapped. CNN later reported that the train’s conductor survived the crash and was speaking with investigators.

Update 2:22pm: Gov. Chris Christie said the person killed in the crash was not on the train and the death was caused by falling debris at the station. After initially being suspended, PATH is now operating normally.
