Warner Bros. has just released a second trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, its highly-anticipated psychological thriller/jukebox musical based on the romantic lives of a couple Batman villains. Take a look:
As the trial of Arthur Fleck unfolds, The Joker falls in love with fellow Arkham inmate, Harley Quinn–and it seems reciprocal this time. Of course, when your lead characters are two of the most unreliable narrators in fiction, its difficult to tell what exactly is diegetic to the story and what’s pure fantasy. As Quentin Tarantino stated– if you were on board for the original film–then by the end, it successfully “got the audience to think like a lunatic.” If this trailer is any indication, the sequel plans to take that theme and run with it. We can’t really know what story Folie à Deux tells until its release, but it looks like we’re meant to cheer on a violent, political uprising lead by an incarcerated murderer– while literally singing along to songs we know and love! That’s about as subversive as major motion picture release gets. The Joker must be proud.
In addition to Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker: Folie à Deux stars Zazie Beetz, Leigh Gill, Sharon Washington, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung and Harry Lawtey.
It’s currently scheduled for an October 2, 2024 release overseas before its U.S. opening two days later on October 4.
