James Franco Will Try To Save JFK in Hulu’s 11/22/63

Time travel: it’s not just for films and TV anymore. Hulu’s adapting Stephen King’s 2011 story 11/23/63. And it’s just cast its star, who is also going to produce: James Franco.

11/23/63 will be an “event series” — which, seriously, is miniseries such a dirty word? Why have the last two years been inundated with “event series”? — in which Franco will Jake Epping. Epping, a present-day English teacher, finds himself traveling back in time to stop the assassination of JFK. The press release from Hulu explains, “But his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, his falling in love and the past itself … which doesn’t want to be changed.”

Goddamit, past, this is why it’s so hard to love you. Why won’t you just let yourself be changed?

It’s really hard to pin down if Franco’s right for this. He has taught college film courses before, so he can tap into that for Epping. He also strikes me as simultaneously so of the modern era and like he’d fit right in wearing sixties fashions that, aesthetically at least, this makes sense.

Either way, it’s Hulu grabbing a very recognizable name for its next big venture. It is the era of internet entertainment, after all.
