If last night’s BAFTA awards are anything to go by, Avatar’s chances at the upcoming Academy Awards suddenly don’t look so good. But at least Moon got a chance to shine.
Avatar missed out on every award it was nominated save two at last night’s British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which are often used as a way to predict future Oscar winners. Winning the Special Visual Effects and Production Design categories, James Cameron’s movie nonetheless lost out to Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker for Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound and Best Editing, also losing Best Music to Pixar’s Up (which also won Best Animated Film). The BAFTA snub continues a trend for the movie; it also lost out to The Hurt Locker at the Writers Guild of America awards on Saturday, having already suffered a similar fate at the Directors Guild of America awards earlier this month. Now Cameron’s “I don’t want an Oscar” talk seems less like reverse psychology and more like trying to look like he’s the one who initiated the break-up in the first place.
It wasn’t all bad news for science fiction movie fans, however; Duncan Jones’ Moon deservedly won outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer, despite its Oscar snub.
