So yeah, it’s the holiday week, and there’s almost no new comics out. But a few brave publishers are launching new series — including a couple which actually sound like they might be worth the trip to the store. And there’s a couple new trades that might be worth catching up on as well.
Here’s your ultra-light, almost non-existent list of new comics for this week!
Top image: Mara #1
First Issues
Image has Mara #1, from acclaimed writer Brian Wood with art by newcomer Ming Doyle. The first issue is getting some good reviews and it’s an intriguing concept. A young woman who’s already a celebrity athlete suddenly manifests supernatural powers on live television. Cue a cultural meltdown and an examination of pop culture and athletics. Plus there’s also Hip Flask Ouroborous, the penultimate issue.
Boom! has Deathmatch #1, in which a supervillain kidnaps the world’s greatest superheroes, forcing them to fight to the death — until only one remains. It’s basically Battle Royale with superheroes.
Marvel has Amazing Spider-Man #700, which you might have heard about already.
And Dynamite has The Shadow Special #1.
Trade Paperbacks and Hardcovers
Image Comics has Pilot Season Volume 3, featuring Robert Kirkman and Mark Silvestri creating five new projects. Plus Savage Dragon Archives Volume 3.
DC has Northlanders Volume 7, the “final epic” of Brian Wood’s widely praised series. Plus a Gears of War Volume 3 hardcover.
And Dark Horse has Clone Wars Omnibus Volume 3, including what happens when the clones turn against the Jedi during Revenge of the Sith. I remember when those issues came out, and it’s pretty neat stuff. Including the ultimate fate of Quinlan Vos.
As usual, here’s the list of everything being released to comic stores tomorrow, and you can find your nearest comic retailer here.
