A Castaway’s Adventure Takes an Unexpectedly Happy Turn in Studio Ghibli’s The Red Turtle

The latest from Studio Ghibli, still reconfiguring itself since Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement, offers a very promising look toward the studio’s future. The Red Turtle, by animator Michaël Dudok de Wit, is Ghibli’s first co-production; it has no dialogue, but is filled with gorgeously simple, hand-drawn images.

The story is also simple, but like all Ghibli movies, it has a certain magic to it, too. The Red Turtle is set to make its debut at the currently underway Cannes Film Festival.
