What’s next from Sony

Well, the dirty work of covering CES has begun, and it does literally look like I’ll be getting no sleep for the next 72 hours (it’s 2am and I’m supposed to leave the hotel at 7am for an early morning meeting). We caught Sony’s press conference yesterday afternoon, and while there weren’t too many surprises (flogging the Clie UX50 seemed a little tired and we already knew about that new 1GB Mini Disc), they did reveal that their wireless DVD Dream surround system will become available here in the US and that they’ll launch an online music service this spring (but these days, who isn’t?).

But what we’re really excited about is something called LocationFree, which consists of a 12.1-inch wireless LCD touchscreen television that connects to a basestation over WiFi. Besides being a nifty wireless portable TV the LocationFree can also be used to access the Internet, stream video, do email, etc. This is what Smart Display should have been.
